In reading workshop we have been working on talking with our partners about the books we are reading. The students are reading books from their book boxes and then turning to talk with their partner about their favorite part and making text to self connections. I gave them the script...
My favorite part is... because... and This book reminds me of......
They are supposed to be able to share why it is their favorite part and give specific details about how the book is related to their own life. We have also talked about how when you are talking to someone about books you have a conversation with them...so when they tell you something about the book they are reading, you can say something back to them like, "I like that part, too!" or "My dog did the same thing!"We are still working on decoding and comprehension strategies and I am meeting with your child individually or in small groups 1-3 times per week.
We just had an AWESOME unit of study in writing called Improving the Quality of Our Illustrations. They did amazing things. I taught them to add things like action lines, facial expressions, speaking bubbles, night or day, filling the page. Ask your student what they tried! They did such a great job. I will show you some of their work at conferences. We are moving on to Improving the Quality of the Language. We are making the words we write better buy adding action, dialogue, setting, feelings etc. I can't wait to see what they do.
In math, we are finishing up the unit on teen numbers and are moving into subtraction after break. This is the most difficult unit. Please let me know if they are struggling with homework. We are working on this in morning meeting and centers as well.
